Math Problem For ALL

Solve this problem:

3 merchants spent a night at a hotel roomwhich cost them 30 rupees per night. The 3 merchants decided to share this cost. The owner being kind decided to give them a discount of 5 rupees. He passed the 5 rupees to his son after receiving the 30 rupees from the merchants. The owner's son finds it difficult to distribute 5 rupees among 3 merchants. So he kept 2 and gave 3 rupees back to the merchants. So each merchant now only paid 9 rupees each which is a total of 27 rupees. This plus the 2 rupees pocketed by the owner's son adds up to 29 rupees. So where did the 1 remaining rupee gone to???

Is this supposed to be a trick question? Actually, if you count it back, the lodgers had to pay 8 1/3 rupee with the 5 rupee discount. When the owner gave them 3 rupees back, each lodger paid 9 1/3. Totalling at 30 rupees, no missing 1 rupee. I hope it solves the question
